For an addict in recovery, there is nothing more discouraging than the length of time waiting for progress in addiction recovery. It seems to take forever. One-on-one counseling and group therapy are among some of the experiences one would have experienced in treatment. Those experiences should continue throughout your addiction and recovery process, the longer the better.
The absolute most important thing to make sure you do is to continue going to counseling even after you finish your program at the treatment center. Turn to your next stage therapists and counselors to make sure you stay on the right path in recovery.
Don’t forget that it will take time! Once your are released from the addiction treatment program, you may feel very frustrated by the fact that cravings for alcohol or drugs are still nagging at your thoughts. No matter how dismal or depressing that thought seems, you must remember that recovery is a process that takes time. There is nothing you can do to speed up the recovery process.
Do not let yourself become frustrated! Never allow yourself to get to the point of desperation where you are trying to convince yourself that one more drink or high is not going to hurt you Take a step back and think about how your recovery happens one day at a time. For simply keeping their heads above water, some people have to coax themselves to take a minute, an hour or even a day at a time.
Find new behaviors – this is something that many addiction counselors will focus on. What are you going to do when the cravings and urges start? Imagine how much you will benefit by replacing drug or alcohol use activity with something that is productive!
For any person suffering from an addiction, and in a recovery, it is important to have support from those that love and care about you. Getting your family involved and letting them know about your problems and addictions is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Many addicts don’t tell their families when they are struggling, but family should know. They will help you get back on your feet and stay there and provide a lot of emotional support when you need it the most!
Never Give Up! – This is a very old cliche, but has proven to work many times over. Recovering addicts can never lose hope. You must remember to never give up in the face of temptation or frustration since the cravings for drugs and/or alcohol that you just got away from will return to tempt you.
In order to successfully overcome addiction, it is recommended that you follow the steps which are outlined in your continuing care program. By following all of these steps and surrounding yourself with positive influences, you will be in a position to get help in the future when you absolutely need it!
