Alcohol has always been present in social activities. Many people consider it a social drink because is it linked with parties and other social gathering. People continue on drinking alcohol even though they themselves are aware of its negative and positive effects on the bodies. Drinking alcohol seems to be an accepted behavior in the society it is so widely accepted that it is common for people to have a drink together with their meals. As widely accepted as alcohol is, however, there are some who take it a step too far and become addicted to alcohol. Alcoholism is expressed as the heavy use, abuse and or dependency on alcohol. Individuals who feel like they cannot go through the day without a drink show signs of alcohol dependency.
To find out if a person is under the influence of alcohol, a person undergoes tests which include urine alcohol test, blood alcohol test, alcohol breathalyzer test and saliva alcohol test. There is also a self-assessment alcoholic test to help find out if you are alcoholic or not.
There are many medical treatments available for alcoholism. The movement Alcoholics Anonymous has been utilizing the twelve-step treatment in their program. The twelve-step process is a way of life that emphasizes honesty, faith, surrender, soul searching, integrity, acceptance, humility, willingness, forgiveness, maintenance, making contact and service. The foundation of this program are staying sober one day at a time, attending meetings, working with a sponsor or a more experienced member of the group and service.
Another approach in treating alcoholism is health coaching. The goal of this program is to help people develop their mind, body, and spirituality in improving their health.
Alcohol addiction treatment center offers inpatient or outpatient programs. Medication may be prescribed during alcohol treatment to help prevent relapses from happening. However, it is not highly suggested because medication can lead to another form of addiction.
Alcoholism is an addictive disorder that can affect individuals who are closest to the alcoholic, especially family members. Family members see the alcoholic on a day by day basic, which is why relationships may become strained. There are programs which include family members to help families move on from the problem and help rebuild ties that were broken.
